The Order of Abstraction
Dan Covert is an artist, designer and director who lives in Brooklyn, NY. He began to experiment with painting and woodworking as a way to reconnect with making. Since then, he has developed a graphic language of organic and decisive forms. His work explores structuring and ordering these abstract shapes so they appear composed yet spontaneous. Dan is as interested in negative space as he is the positive, while he continues to develop new forms and compositions, using both analog and digital processes.
About
Dan grew up in Ohio and studied graphic design at CCA in San Francisco. During school, he worked for X-Large clothing and fell in love with Los Angeles and West Coast culture, aesthetics and style. After graduation, Dan moved to New York to work for MTV designing logos, clothing and ads, then directing show opens and promos. For eight years, he also taught design, new media and thesis courses at Pratt Institute while helping to develop their curriculum.
In 2007 Dan co-founded Dress Code, a production company, with his college friend Andre Andreev. Dress Code creates short animations, commercials and documentaries for ad agencies and brands. Their work has been honored by SXSW, Raindance, The Webby Awards, Vimeo Staff Picks, Short of the Week, One Screen, AFI Docs, Seattle International Film Festival and ADC Young Guns.
